Ingredients

Apple Filling:

2 cups peeled and chopped apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)

1/4 cup brown sugar

1 tsp cinnamon

1 tsp lemon juice

1 tbsp flour

Cake Batter:

1 cup unsalted butter, softened

1 cup granulated sugar

2 large eggs

1 cup sour cream

2 tsp vanilla extract

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 tsp baking soda

1/2 tsp salt

1 1/2 tsp baking powder

Crumble Topping:

1/2 cup brown sugar

1/2 cup flour

1 tsp cinnamon

1/4 cup cold butter, cubed

Instructions

  1. Prepare Apple Filling: In a saucepan, combine apples, brown sugar, cinnamon, lemon juice, and flour. Cook over medium heat for 5–7 minutes until soft and thickened. Set aside to cool.
  2. Make Crumble Topping: Mix brown sugar, flour, and cinnamon. Cut in butter until crumbly. Chill in fridge.
  3. Preheat Oven: Set oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9×13-inch pan.
  4. Make Cake Batter: Cream butter and sugar until fluffy. Add eggs, sour cream, and vanilla. In another bowl, mix flour, baking soda, salt, and baking powder. Gradually mix into wet ingredients.
  5. Assemble Layers: Spread half the batter in the pan. Add the apple filling layer. Spread the remaining batter over apples. Top with crumble.
  6. Bake: Bake for 45–50 minutes, until a toothpick inserted comes out clean. Cool for 20 minutes before slicing.
